What CRIB Is — and What It Isn't
The Credit Information Bureau (CRIB) of Sri Lanka was established under the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka Act No. 18 of 1990. It collects and shares credit information from member institutions — primarily commercial banks, licensed finance companies, and approved leasing companies.
CRIB does not create a single numerical credit score the way credit bureaus in the US (FICO) or UK (Experian) do. Instead, it provides a credit report that shows your repayment history, current outstanding loans, defaults, and court orders related to debt recovery.
What Appears on a CRIB Report
Negative Records
- ❌ Missed or late loan payments (banks)
- ❌ Loan defaults or write-offs
- ❌ Debt restructuring or rescheduling
- ❌ Legal judgments related to debt
- ❌ Credit card over-limit or default
What Doesn't Appear
- ✅ Digital micro-loan repayment history
- ✅ Utility bill payment records
- ✅ Mobile phone bill payments
- ✅ Social media or banking app data
- ✅ Income or salary information
Why Digital Lenders Can Bypass CRIB
Digital micro-lenders (CashX, CashLoan, LoanPlus) are not CBSL-licensed finance companies — they are private companies that lend their own capital. Because they are not members of the CRIB reporting network, they don't receive CRIB data for their borrowers, and they don't report repayment history back to CRIB. This works both ways: your bad CRIB record won't block you, but your good repayment of digital loans won't improve your CRIB record either.
How to Improve Your CRIB Standing
To build a positive CRIB credit record in Sri Lanka:
- Pay all bank loans and credit cards on time, every month
- If you have an old default, contact the bank to negotiate a settlement — settled defaults are less damaging than open ones
- Avoid taking multiple new bank loans simultaneously within a short period
- Request your CRIB report annually to verify there are no errors
