The Rise of Digital Lending in Sri Lanka and Why Verification Matters
Sri Lanka’s economic recovery has accelerated the adoption of fintech micro-loans. When traditional commercial banks require weeks of processing, tax files, and payslips, digital lenders provide a vital financial bridge. However, the absence of borrower awareness has opened the door for illegal, unverified mobile applications.
1. The PV Number Test (Registrar General of Companies)
Every legitimate direct lender in Sri Lanka operates under an incorporated private limited company registered in Colombo. For example:
- LoanPlus: AIS IT Consulting Services (Pvt) Ltd —
PV00215063 - CashX: A V Business Solutions (Pvt) Ltd —
PV00211145 - Fino: FinTech Solutions (Pvt) Ltd —
PV00221752
If an app or website refuses to publish its legal corporate entity and company registration number in its website footer, do not submit your NIC or bank details.
2. Intrusive App Permissions vs. Browser-Based Applications
Unethical loan predators frequently distribute sideloaded APK files that demand READ_CONTACTS, READ_SMS, and READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permissions. They weaponize your contact list during debt collection. In contrast, verified lenders such as LoanPlus operate through secure browser web applications (HTTPS) and collect only the documents needed for identity verification (NIC and active phone number).
3. DALA (Digital Alternative Lending Association) Accreditation
DALA is Sri Lanka’s self-regulatory body established to promote fair lending, prevent predatory interest compounding, and enforce ethical debt recovery. Borrowers are encouraged to prioritize DALA-member institutions whenever possible.
